Embracing Autumn: Fun Family Activities for September
Like how the leaves start turning in September, the fall season is a fantastic time to dive into new activities, fun for the entire family! It used to be that as the temperature started to change, all I could think about was how I was about to have a house packed with rambunctious kids! Now, I LOVE those crisp fall days and all the super fun activities for the entire family that comes with them. Are you ready to embrace autumn this year?
Here is your ultimate fall bucket list.
Get Outside
Despite the cooler temperatures that greet the new season, getting outside and enjoying September is still easy! So many outdoor fall activities are fun for the whole family. Here are some of my favorite outdoor activities for families:
Visit a Local Farm
Heading to a local farm is a great way to spend a fall afternoon! There are so many wonderful vegetables ready for harvest, and the Farmer's Market often goes right until the end of September (sometimes with a petting zoo for your younger kids!).
Or, visit a pumpkin patch or an apple orchard! Kids love choosing the perfect pumpkin to decorate the front step, and once October comes around and you carve them for Halloween, you can roast pumpkin seeds, make pumpkin pie, and bask in all things pumpkin pie spice.
Apple orchards are also an excellent idea for apple picking! Once your apple picking basket is full and you've done an apple taste test, you can dream of apple cider and keep the fun by making an apple pie with the whole family.
If your local farm hosts a fall festival, you might even get to let your kids run wild in a corn maze — a fall bucket list must! Harvest festivals are fun fall activities and will have something for all family members, including younger kids.
Enjoy Your Backyard
Family fall activities don't have to mean leaving the house all the time! There are plenty of excellent, fun fall activities that can be done in your backyard. Make hot chocolate and enjoy a cozy bonfire. Collect pine cones and gorgeous fall leaves, or rake them into a giant leaf pile for some fun!
Go For a Family Bike Ride or Nature Walk
One of my favorite fall family activities is to get out for a big family bike ride or nature walk! Make a local park your destination and set up a fall picnic (with that farm-fresh apple cider!). Kids love a nature scavenger hunt; it is a fun way to explore your neighborhood. While you're out, remember to collect leaves for activities for kids to do inside!
Volunteer
Fall is a season that reminds me to give back! Volunteer at the local food bank or food pantry. Drop off some of those apples from your apple-picking day to a few food banks in the area.
Volunteering at the food bank or even the local football game is also a fun activity for older kids and is a great way to get them to give back to their community. Of course, volunteering isn't just a fun fall activity — it is one of the best activities for families any time of the year.
Make Fall Snacks
Your favorite fall snacks will warm you up as the weather gets colder. Luckily baking and cooking are two of the best fall family activities around! Plus, as a mom, it saves you from doing it all yourself.
My favorite fall things to make with my kids are pumpkin bread, candy apples, apple chips, popcorn balls, roasted pumpkin seeds, and pumpkin pie and apple pie. These are fun things to make and will get you right into the fall spirit.
Cozy Nights In
One of the best parts about the fall weather is the cozy nights. These are the two activities for families that always make my fall bucket list:
Movie Night
Movie night is the ultimate fun activity for the whole family! Especially if your kids are too young for a haunted house, pick a spooky yet appropriate movie, chef up some grilled cheese, and cozy together for the night.
Fall Crafts
There are so many fun ideas for a cute craft or two on the internet. It is one of the best activities for kids on those long, dark evenings.
Crafts are a fun way to use those leaves and pinecones you've been collecting, and there are lots of free printable coloring sheets, as well as ways to turn your toilet paper tubes into beautiful, fun fall art. It's tough to beat a toilet paper roll turkey or pinecone craft when it comes to fun fall activities for families.
Embrace the Autumn Season
Happy fall! There are so many fantastic fall activities for kids and activities for families that make the colder weather a treat. Whether you're running for the corn maze, the petting zoo, the haunted house, or want to enjoy the season in your own home, I hope you embrace the autumn season, learn to love fall, and dive into the fun fall activities that await.
